Beautiful weather is finally here and not a moment too soon. Finally, wigs won’t be tangling on scarves, hoods and coats. With the gorgeous weather comes its own set of tricks needed to keep your wigs looking their best!

First, with the rising temperature comes an increase in the need to wash your wigs. In the wintertime, until your wig needs to be detangled, you do not need to wash it. In the summer time, with sweat and your own scalp oils increasing, all of that ends up in your wig cap and hair. Those oils and sweat will make your wig look greasier and in need of a wash sooner.

Second, with summer comes summer storms and some unreal levels of humidity. Humidity is not a friend to wigs (or hair) and can cause frizz and hair to fall flat and not hold a style well. While not much can be done to fight nature, you should definitely invest in a defrizz serum (Pantene Anti Frizz Serum or Living Proof Instant Defrizzer) There is a hack floating around the Internet that a dryer sheet can remove frizz if you swipe the wig with it, gently. If you’re feeling crafty, you can give it a shot and let us know how it goes!

Another factor to be aware of is sun exposure. Prolonged exposure to the sun can oxidize a wig quite badly, giving it that orange/red appearance and heat can dry out hair a great deal. Oxidation can be fixed by getting your wig rooted but its simpler to avoid the issue altogether. Most of the time, it is cars with a sun roof that can be the culprit of most of the exposure. Just keep a silk scarf or cap in the car when going on longer drives to help your color last longer. With the dryness, consider doing a deep condition when washing or letting the conditioner sit for 5 to 10 minutes for a little extra love.

Lastly, storing your wigs in a cool, dry place is imperative in the summertime. In the winter, you can get away with keeping your wig out and about but with the sun’s rays out strong and humidity being a real factor, its vital to your wig and its styles longevity to find a cool area that doesn’t have direct sunlight.

Wishing everyone a beautiful and fun summer!
